SOHC Sports
Special Olympics Unified Sports® – brings together athletes with and without
intellectual disabilities to train and compete together on Special Olympics sports
teams.
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round training and athletic
competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with
intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical
fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts
and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the
community.
FALL SPORTS
Registration: July 1st through July 15th
Practice: August to October
Fall Classic is held mid October
Corn Hole
Corn Hole is new to the schedule as of 2011. It is available to athletes and
partners that are 40 years old and older. There will be traditional events and also
unified events. Practice will be once a week and then the big competition will be held at
the EKS Games.
Distance Running and Walking
Distance running and walking is open to any level of athlete and unified
partner. The distances are a 3K (1.8 miles) or a 5K (3.1 miles) and this can be
done running or walking. Together the athlete and coach will decide on the
distance and if they will run or walk at the EKS Games. A unified partner can join
an athlete and compete alongside of them. Practice is once a week and ending
with the EKS Games in September.
Flag Football
Flag football is a traditional and/or unified team sport. We also offer
Individual Skills Competition for athletes that aren’t able to play in a team setting.
Practice is once a week with several games during the season. The season ends
with the big tournament at the EKS Games.
Golf
Golf offers Individual Skills Competition, Traditional Individual 3, 6, or 9
hole Competition, and also Unified 2 person Competition. Practice is once a
week and is scheduled at one of the local golf courses. Individual skills is a great
way to learn the skill of golfing and then the 3, 6, and 9 hole competition would
be the next level. There is a golf sectional and then he big competition is at the EKS
Games in September.
Fall Aquatics
Fall aquatics (swimming) is open to all level of swimmers. Practices are held on
Monday and Saturday. This sport also offers athletes and unified partners to
compete together. Fall aquatics will be a season where the athletes and partners learn
to swim, practice, get in shape, and have lots of fun. There might be an inner squad
swim meet and then also an organized meet against other counties.
FALL/WINTER SPORT
Registration: August 15th through September 1st
Practice: September through November
Bowling
Bowling consists of Assisted Ramp Competition, Individual (Singles)
Competition, and Unified (4 person) Team. Practice is on Sunday afternoons at
the Stardust Bowling Alley in Noblesville. The area competition is held the first
weekend in November and then the State Competition is the first weekend in
December.
WINTER SPORTS
Registration: October 15th through November 1st
Practice: November through March
Basketball
Basketball has 4 different ways to be involved. We offer the Individual
Skills Competition for athletes that arenʼt able to play in a game setting. We then
have a half court team for athletes that are more comfortable playing on a
smaller court. Then we have basketball teams that are traditional and unified. We
offer 3 different age groups and we also offer a womenʼs team. Practice is once a
week and then several games and tournaments are scheduled throughout the
season. Sectionals are held in March and if the teams advance to states those
will be held at the end of March.
Cheerleading
Cheerleading is held at DeVeauʼs School of Gymnastic in Fishers. Practice
is held once a week and then the athletes will cheer at a few of the basketball
games during the season. They will learn different cheers to use at the games.
There will not be a competition at the end of this season.
Ice Skating
Ice Skating is held at the Forum in Fishers. There is one practice a week.
The athletes will learn to do figure skating and will have a competition held the
first part of March.
Ice Hockey
Ice Hockey is held at the Forum in Fishers. Athletes will learn to skate and
play hockey. Unified partners are welcome to participate with the hockey
program. There is one practice a week with games throughout the season.
SPRING SPORTS
Registration: February 15th through March 1st
Practice: March through June
State Games is held at Indiana State University and is a 2 night sleepover
in the dorms the first weekend in June
Track and Field
Track and field is available for all levels of athletes. There are motor
development events, assisted walking events, wheelchair events, track events,
field events, and a unified team event. Practice is twice a week. There is an Area
Meet and then the big competition is the State Games.
Bocce
Athletes and Unified Partners must be at least 30 years old to compete in
bocce. There are traditional and unified teams available. Practice is once a week.
There are two competitions during the spring with the big competition at the State
Games.
Spring Aquatics
Spring aquatics is open to all level of swimmers. Practices are held on
Monday and Saturday. This sport also offers athletes and unified partners to
compete together. Most of the events are 25 or 50 yard races, although there are
a few 100ʻs. The 4 strokes are Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Butterfly.
Donʼt worry if you canʼt swim, we will teach you. Spring Competition is an area
meet and then the big competition is the States Games.
Cycling
Cycling is held on a circular track offering three types of events. The first
event is modified with a 500m and 1K, the second event is the traditional events
with a 500m, 1K and a 5K, and the third event is the unified events that are 500m
and 1K tandem events. Practice is held one day a week and the big competition
is at the State Games.
SUMMER SPORTS
Registration: May 15th through June 1st
Practice: June through August
Midwest Sports Fest is held mid August
Softball
We offer traditional and unified softball teams. We also offer the Individual
Skills Competition for athletes that aren’t able to play in a game setting. Practices
are once a week and there will be several games throughout the season.
Midwest Sports Fest is the big tournament at the end of the season.
Gymnastics
Gymnastics is held at DeVeauʼs School of Gymnastics in Fishers. The
athletes practice many types of gymnastic moves using several of the
apparatuses. Practice is once a week and there is no formal competition with this
sport.
Equestrian
Equestrian is held at the Agape Therapeutic Riding Center in Cicero. The
session includes 8 lessons and the competition is in the middle of September.
Equestrian is limited to 16 athletes and there are requirements to be able to
participate in this sport. Please inquiry if you are interested in Equestrian.
