                                                  Play Unified

WHAT IS UNIFIED SPORTS?

Dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences, Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the

same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and

playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding.

In Unified Sports, teams are made up of people of similar age and ability, which makes practices more fun and games more challenging and exciting for all. Having sport in common

is just one more way that preconceptions and false ideas are swept away.

Our opponent is intolerance. Only shoulder-to-shoulder,

as teammates together, can we defeat it.

Why Unified Sports Matters?

People with disabilities don't often get a change to play on their school sports teams,

but more and more U.S. states are adopting the unified sports approach

that Special Olympics pioneered.

Fact: 200 million people with intellectual disabilities

are denied social inclusion in society.

A good community is one that is built on inclusion, and the way we grow

to have better inclusion of those of us with special needs is through acceptance.

It is when we come to accept the different abilities that we show that acceptance,

and inclusion can then become a regular part of our society.

And, the way we come to have acceptance is through awareness.

Ask our team to join yours...

Special Olympics offers sports teams that blend people with and without intellectual disabilities, and this is a model that encourages sports and fun, and which also gets people together

to learn more about each other. Our teams love to be included in your school activities.

Invite us to play a unified game at your school, host a clinic so our athletes can learn

from your team, etc.  This is a great way to offer a positive foundation for activity

between special education and general education students in schools.
